Neighborhood Programs
Youth Mentoring & Development
Today we are well aware that as the demands on families continue to increase and the support of communities and families decrease, the need for "the village" is paramount. We need communities that can surround at-risk youth and underserved families to help provide opportunities and resources that otherwise are out of reach.
Homework Hub After School Tutoring Program
One of our primary programs is Homework Hub, an academic program serving Shoreline elementary students. With rich cultural diversity and over 78 languages spoken in the home district wide, a great number of students in ELL, and a high percentage of low-income children, many of our schools are faced with great challenges. So are working families. Because the demand for additional support is growing while budgets are shrinking, Homework Hub provides free after school homework support and tutoring for students who need it and are falling behind in school. We partner with neighbors, high schools and colleges to provide volunteer tutors. Our goal is that every child will be engaged in school and connected to community -- so that every child can thrive.
Summer Explorers Educational Day Camp
Summer Explorers is an educational summer day camp for Shoreline elementary students in grades 1-6. Academic activities include math, reading, writing, science, and art projects all related to daily field trips around the greater Seattle area. Because demands are high in the summer months upon working families, Turning Point provides a quality summer program that keeps kids engaged and learning, all while building relationship with mentors and peers!
Invest in the Neighborhood
What our neighborhoods need most are people who care. People who will show up and participate. Citizens who will care about our local economy, landscape and health. Neighbors who will mentor, educate and coach. And community members who will collaborate, create and dream.
In healthy communities, everyone is valued. Everyone has gifts to offer. And as we participate, we are all enriched by the social fabric created.
What are your gifts? What is your dream?
We encourage you to awaken to the treasures hidden in plain sight within and among us.
Community Partnering
Community Giving Garden
The Twin Ponds Giving Garden partners with Lakeside and Evergreen Schools to grow organic vegetables and herbs for HopeLink Food Bank. The Giving Garden is an extraordinary opportunity for those who love to garden to give something back to their community--helping hundreds of people living on limited incomes supplement their diets with fresh, organic, locally grown fruits and vegetables, supporting community connections and a healthier urban environment.
Back to School Consortium
Turning Point partners with the community effort to assist low income and circumstances-challenged families in the Shoreline School District and South Snohomish County. The annual Back to School Events provide thousands of students with school supplies, haircuts, and clothing to begin their school year with confidence, dignity and smiles. You can join the effort to provide supplies, funding, or time to make this event an inspiring success. For more info, visit www.btsconsortium.org.
Food4Kids Weekend Backpack Program
The Food4Kids Backpack Program provides weekend food packages to chronically hungry students from low-income households who are at risk of hunger over the weekend when free school meals are unavailable. Every Friday students are discretely given a bag of food containing easy to prepare foods which is then tucked into their backpacks and brought home. When children receive the nourishment they need, they can begin to experience success, academically, developmentally and socially. We believe that when we come together as a community, there will always be enough. No child should go hungry or worry about the next meal. Turning Point is also the fiscal partner and serves on the advisory board and for a broader community effort, Food4Kids Shoreline to ensure that no child goes hungry.
YMCA Summer Camp
The YMCA Summer Camp Initiative at Orkila and Colman provide at-risk youth with experiences that are life changing. The YMCA camp experience includes exploring nature, learning new skills, gaining respect for the environment, making friends, and acquiring leadership attributes. Our partnership with the YMCA Camping Services gives Turning Point youth the opportunity to attend Camp Orkila for consecutive years and then attend Leadership Camp where youth eventually serve as staff.
Neighbor Engagement
We participate actively in our communities, seeking to know our neighbors, find partners and network with community organizations and businesses for the good of the whole. We love to support the good work that others are already doing and join with them, sharing resources across the neighborhood.
